AREAS SERVED

The Maternity and Early Childhood Foundation provides funding for agencies located in very high need communities where other services are often limited or nonexistent. Funded agencies are selected through a rigorous Request for Proposal process. The Board of Directors reviews proposals and makes funding decisions.

The funded programs are able to engage young low income vulnerable expectant and new parents and connect them with needed services. Funded services include:

outreach to parents who might not seek services,
assistance with access to prenatal care and health insurance,
crisis intervention and case management services,
information on breast feeding, infant safety, healthy child development and and positive parenting skills,
support for education and employment goals,
home visiting and parent support services.

Casa de Apoyo Para Padres: Parenting Program for the Hispanic Community

The project will work with Spanish-speaking pregnant and parenting young women in Corona and Astoria, Queens. Target program participants will come from our Therese Cervini Head Start Center, Queens North Community Center, local churches/parishes, and local Hispanic community social centers. The program will provide parent education and crisis counseling.

Expectant Parent Services

Parent education and support services will be provided to pregnant/parenting women, their partners, and their infants and toddlers. The goal is to increase parents's knowledge and skills in infant and early child develpment and to promote the physical and mental health and well-being of the mother and child.

Young Parents Program

The Young Parents Program promotes nurturing families through the development of young parents' knowledge and skill related to the children's development. Methods include in-home assessments and training, prenatal/parenting classes, short term supportive counseling and referral linkage. A community based model is used to afford greater accessibility to families.

Community of Caring - Mentor Moms

The Community of Caring program will provide intensive outreach and assessment, counseling and support, and or mentoring to pregnant/parenting women. Services will include home visits and group meetings offering mental health counseling, prenatal health education, parenting instruction, and transportation to necessary appointments. Children witnessing a domestic violence will receive supportive counseling.

Healthy Teens/Healthy Babies

Healthy Teens/Healthy Babies provides prenatal and infant care education and home-based therapy to pregnant and parenting teenagers living in the City of Syracuse. The goals are to ensure the young women deliver a healthy baby and receive the supports necessary to bond and nurture their infant in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment.

Regina Maternity Services

The Regina Mentoring Services supports stable living for previously homeless and at risk pregnant and parenting young women and provides parenting education by connecting young pregnant and parenting women with mentors from the community who encourage their development as workers and parents. The program offers educational workshops, recreational opportunities, and a caring, supportive relationship to the young women.

Community Connections for Positive Parenting

Community Connections for Positive Parenting will utilize a variety of strategies to meet the diverse needs of young families, including teen parents in Jefferson and Lewis counties. An Educational Coordinator will collaborate with community organizations to provide home visits and group classes that include parenting, nutrition, relationship and financial management education, prenatal and pediatric care as well as educational and employment support.

Baby & Me - Tobacco Free Program

The Baby & Me - Tobacco Free Program is an evidenced-based prenatal/postpartum cessation program which helps pregnant women quit smoking and stay quit 6 months postpartum. By reducing the rate of prenatal smoking, the program has successfully decreased the number of premature births and increased the number of babies born healthy weight.

Parent Aide Services

The Infant-Toddler Parents Program provides a developmental child care program for infants and children up to age 3, parent education and home-based services for Spanish speaking high-risk pregnant and parenting women and their children, 0-3.5 years. The home-based program provides parent aides services that includes assessments, educational programming and family support in a nurturing atmosphere.

Teens as Parents

Teens as Parents is an innovative school based and home visiting parenting education program which encompasses parenting education and labor, delivery and postpartum support services. LSAFHS Maternity Outreach Program provides prenatal and postpartum assessment, education and case management, including home nursing visits, breast feeding consultation, child birth education, and a variety of parent groups. Supportive Housing for Pregnant and Parenting Teens

Mercy Community Services provides supportive housing to homeless pregnant and parenting teens. The program empowers young mothers to meet the physical and emotional needs of their babies, and to live self-sufficiently through education sessions incorporating evidence-based practices, and through the day-to-day practice of skills in our supportive community with 24 hour staffing to guide, mentor, and support.

MOMMAS House

MOMMAS House is a mother-child residential program for pregnant/parenting women (17 to 23 years old) and their children.
