Pajama Story Time
Reading aloud to children is one of the easiest and most effective ways to expose them to language and to encourage them to develop literacy skills on their own. Reading should be a positive bonding experience that families look forward to, but less than 40% of children ages 0-5 years are read to by a family member every day. Consequently, one in three children enters kindergarten without the language skills needed for literacy acquisition. To help nurture an early love of reading, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens offers a Pajama Story Time workshop for parents and children. Attendees learned about appropriate reading levels, creating a reading environment at home, and the benefits of early reading. Each family left the workshop with a bag filled with children’s books to read at home.
